Minneapolis Erasures #06: The “Unprintable Words” Edition

The outer world is a thicket of petals and unprintable words. Come make an erasure poem!

WHEN/WHERE?

We will meet in the community room at Common Roots Cafe in Uptown (2558 Lyndale Ave S) on Sunday, February 7 from 7-9 pm. The community room is at the very back of the cafe.

The session will begin with a brief introduction to the form and a discussion of technique. At the end of the meeting, you’ll be given the opportunity to share your poem with the group.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

– An old book or two that you’re comfortable taking pages from (a grab bag of pages will be provided). Science fiction, technical manuals, children’s books, and school textbooks work nicely. Anything you’d find on the free table at the rummage sale is ideal. Magazines and newspapers are great, too.

– White-out, a sharpie, or another erasing tool (some provided).

– A desire to look at written language in a new way, and an interest in talking back to your books!

Your finished erasure poem is a beautiful literary piece of visual art, ready to hang on your wall. They also make great gifts!

NOTE: You need not consider yourself a “writer” or a “poet” to attend! If you are interested in trying out a new art form, or have a penchant for written codes, or are a melancholic type in love with the concept of absence, or simply have an old book lying around that you don’t know what to do with, you are ready to make an erasure poem.
